Abstract

Generative performance in grapevine mainly depends on fruit set within the genetic limits of a given cultivar; however, it is also influenced by multiple factors, including climatic conditions and cultural practices. In this study, the generative performance of 4-four Turkish hybrid grape cultivars (Ece, Efem, Lidya, and Spil Karası) under Çukurova conditions was evaluated based on flower biology, pollen quality, and fruit set characteristics. In all the cultivars, the flowers were hermaphroditic, and the number of anthers was 5 - 6. Pollen viability ranged from 67.3% (Ece, Efem) to 51.5% (Lidya), and pollen germination rate ranged from 29.34% (Efem) to 18.78% (Ece). Under open-pollination conditions, fruit set was determined as 19.66% in Ece, 19.51% in Spil Karası, 13.01% in Efem, and 12.69% in Lidya, with no significant differences among the cultivars. In all cultivars, fruit set remained below 30%, which is regarded as the limit for grapevine, and all were defined as "poor fruit set". Ece and Efem stood out in terms of cluster and berry physical characteristics. Bunch weight ranged from 419.33 g (Ece) to 283.54 g (Lidya), while berry weight varied between 6.39 g (Efem) and 4.33 g (Spil Karası). The average number of fully developed seeds per berry was 3-4 in Lidya, 2-3 in Efem and Spil Karası, and 1-2 in Ece. It was concluded that the components of generative performance in the examined hybrid grape cultivars are shaped by the combined effects of the genetic background associated with their functionally female-flowered parents and the ecological conditions of the region.
