Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the time-dependent changes in photosynthetic and phenolic responses of one-year-old saplings of the ‘Horoz Karası’ (Vitis vinifera L.) grape variety to different durations and intensities of UV-B applications. In the study, low and high-intensity UV-B applications were performed when the saplings were in the 6-7 leaf stage; measurements were taken on the leaves at the time of application and 24 hours after application. Nitrogen balance index (NBI), chlorophyll, flavonoid, and anthocyanin contents were determined using a Dualex Force-A optical sensor. According to the results obtained, UV-B applications caused statistically significant and time-dependent changes in NBI and chlorophyll content. High-intensity UV-B application increased the NBI value by approximately twofold compared to the control group; however, this effect decreased significantly 24 hours after application. Similarly, chlorophyll content increased at the time of application and decreased to control levels after 24 hours. In contrast, time-dependent changes in flavonoid and anthocyanin indices according to UV-B applications were not found to be statistically significant. In conclusion, it was determined that UV-B stress had significant effects on photosynthetic parameters and limited effects on phenolic responses in the Horoz Karası grape variety, and these effects were largely short-lived.
