Determination of pH, Lime and Organic Matter Content of Olive Orchard Soils in Payas District of Hatay Province

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the pH, lime and organic matter contents of the olive orchard soils of Payas district of Hatay province. For this purpose, a total of 28 soil samples were taken from 0-30 and 30-60 cm depths and from 14 different points to represent the soils of the region. The pH, lime and organic matter contents of the soils of the region were determined in the samples. According to the results of the research; pH contents of the soils varied between 7.16-8.30, pH of the soil samples varied between neutral and slightly alkaline, 17.86 % of the soils were neutral and 82.14 % were slightly alkaline. The lime contents of the olive orchard soils of Payas district were between 3.40-21.90 % and the lime contents ranged from calcareous to very calcareous, 21.44 % of the soils were calcareous, 64.28 % were medium calcareous and 14.28 % were very calcareous. The organic matter content of the soils in the study area was found to be between 1.18-5.60 % and the organic matter content of the soil samples varied between low and very high values; 14.28 % of the soils were found to be low, 17.85 % were found to be medium, 32.15 % were found to be high and 35.72% were found to be very high organic matter. While a positive significant relationship was determined between pH content and lime content, a negative significant relationship was determined between pH and organic matter content.
